2024 Statewide Community Regrant Round 1 Announcement

Genesee Valley Council on the Arts distributes over $130,000 in the first of 2 rounds of funding in 2024.

[Mount Morris/ NY] - [2/10] - Genesee Valley Council on the Arts is proud to announce the completion of the first round of funding for the Statewide Community Regrant program in 2024. These funds are made possible through the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA). The below-funded applicants represent individual artists and non-profit arts and cultural organizations in Livingston and Monroe Counties. 

GVCA is excited to support these artists and organizations doing important work investing in the arts and culture to enrich the lives of individuals and communities. The Statewide Community Regrant program offers a unique opportunity for Art Councils to fund programs at the local level. 

Seventy-six grant applications across both counties were received in Round 1, resulting in a highly competitive selection process. The selected projects demonstrated a strong commitment to their mission, and will make a positive impact in the local community.

GVCA congratulates the following organizations for receiving grants:

Monroe County

In Round 1 of the 2024 Statewide Community Regrant Cycle, we are honored to fund 26 proposals for a total of $88,449, supporting the programs of our diverse community. 

Individual Artist:

  • CaTyra Polland- An opportunity for those in the “silent arts” to take center stage.

  • Gabrielle Peck - We make prints of Rochester artists’s work that we ship around the world for free, to showcase the talent and ingenuity of our local artists.

  • Kaitlin Roney- Life Line is a series of large oil paintings, with each image depicting a line from a poem, based on the perceptions of life from youth to old age.

  • Kevin Nitsche- A performer’s edition of Cecile Chaminade’s “L’Automne” for piano four hands that will include detailed performance notes and historical context.

  • Laura Thomas- A 1970s Harlem family works through issues of love, loss, mental illness, sacrifice and an unsolved murder that threatens the unity of the family.

  • Lydia Boddie Rice- To re-position art as an experiential, reflective, primary source of healing energy and restorative care through strategic exhibition and placemaking.

  • Monique Franz- BIRACIAL RAGE is a collection of monologues and 10-minute plays, highlighting the perils (and purpose) of biracial individuals in America.

  • Seth Hebert- Unconventional instrumental music compositions written by Seth Hebert-Faergolzia for conventional instruments to be performed in Rochester, NY.

  • Tara Nelson- IN WONDERLAND: a multi-media installation presenting archival recordings of Alice in Wonderland to create a new experience of this iconic tale.


Arts in Education:

  • Casa Hispana- The program “Connecting Cultures Across Borders” develops the execution of diverse activities to promote the dissemination of bilingualism through culture and art for families in the community with different backgrounds while incorporating art in their learning activities.

  • Center for Youth- “Strings for Success” is an innovative, free, inclusive instrumental strings program for students in grades 3-8 at RCSD School 19.

  • Luna Cooperative- A week long camp for queer/trans/BIPOC youth to explore creativity through different mediums and participate in their own maker market for the community.

  • Sew Green- A 2 week fashion camp which takes campers from sketch to pattern and construction, ending with a runway presentation of their design realized.



Community Arts: 

  • East Rochester Public Library- This project will bring arts workshops to the underserved populations that patronize East Rochester, Scottsville, Ogden, and Churchville libraries.

  • Finger Lakes Choral Festival- The Finger Lakes Choral Festival presents St. Francis in the Americas, by Glenn McClure, and Misa Criolla, by Ariel Ramirez, Sunday, July 28, 2024.

  • Kinsman Avenue Publishing, Inc- Kinsman Avenue Publishing showcases Rochester’s underrepresented authors, playwrights, poets, and artists through performances and exhibits.

  • Monroe Community Hospital Auxiliary- The Dance Series at MCH will bring three culturally diverse dance companies to perform for residents of Monroe Community Hospital.

  • Monroe Community Hospital Auxiliary -To provide a music enrichment program aimed at providing residents in the dementia unit with meaningful and enriching musical experiences.

  • DBA Rochester International Film Festival- The 66th annual Rochester International Film Festival will present four programs of competitively selected short films at the Dryden Theatre.

  • Multi-Use Community Cultural Center- Support for contracted Technical and House Staff for annual festival.

  • Rochester Clown Fest- A week-long festival of clown, physical comedy, and theater, including workshops and performances presented by both local and visiting artists.

  • Rochester International Children’s Film Festival (via our fiscal sponsor: the Children’s Institute)- Hybrid children’s film fest targeted to the underserved feat. non-violent, age-appropriate, artistically excellent films & art/literacy activities.

  • Rochester Oratorio Society, Inc -In response to community interest, ROS will significantly increase its inclusion of music by creators and performers of color during 2023-2024.

  • The Company Theatre- A program to connect students from underserved/rural communities to theater, first time audience members to pursue local theater industry positions.

  • The Rochester Bronze Collective-The Bronze Collective Theatre Fest is an annual cultural celebration in Rochester, NY, dedicated to showcasing diverse talents in theater and arts.

  • Village of Brockport- The Brockport Symphony Orchestra (BSO) will put on inventive and collaborative performances (either virtually or in person) on a quarterly basis with new compositions to excite and engage local audiences with orchestral arrangements that span a variety of themes and musical styles.


Livingston County

In Round 1 of the 2024 Statewide Community Regrant Cycle, we are honored to fund 10 projects for a total of $37,375 in funds supporting our diverse community. Check out the amazing projects and events these applicants will be producing.

Individual Artists Grants:

  • Wendy Fambro -continues work on her documentary about Miche Fambro, a local musician who toured the world, by filming interviews and b-roll drone footage in Livingston County.

Arts in Education:

  • Amanda Sprinkle will be engaging and encouraging children to create music that uplifts and unifies at the Dansville Community Center.

  • Pam Hill will provide visual art activities to residents at the Livingston County Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in order to keep them motivated and independent by improving hand-eye coordination and having fun.

Community Arts:

  • Association for the Preservation of Geneseo - will research, design, and install outdoor public signs in Geneseo’s Village Park, acknowledging Haudenosaunee land and encouraging a reawakening of Indigenous wisdom.

  • Dansville ArtWorks will continue its support of the unique year-round art installation of whimsical fairy doors that stimulate the imagination and is the backbone for the annual Fairy Festival in Dansville.

  • Geneseo Community Players will feature a musical, yet to be determined, that will sure to be fun-filled and entertaining.

  • Mt. Morris Kiwanis will use their funds to support the annual events throughout the summer months, featuring local bands in conjunction with full community events at Bellamy Park.

  • Mt. Morris Library will sponsor visiting artists who will work with older adults, senior center staff, and caregivers to use dance to promote older adults’ general well-being.

  • Town of Geneseo will provide a music program that helps kids find joy in piano, guitar, or vocal lessons over the summer, and seniors enjoy 8 weeks of piano lessons in the Fall.

  • Wadsworth Library plans to offer a variety of programming to the community that includes art, music and education from cultures around the world.

Genesee Valley Council on the Arts looks forward to continuing its support of arts in Monroe and Livingston Counties and encourages nonprofit organizations, individual artists, and educators to apply for future grant opportunities in the SCR program. GVCA intends to fund approximately $125,000 this spring. Round two of the Statewide Community Regrant program is currently open for applications with a deadline of April 11th 2024.
